How it Works
The nose is the only direct opening to the brain from the outside of the body.
Once a fragrance is inhaled it triggers a nerve impulse that reaches the olfactory
(the part of the brain the interprets smell). Neurotransmission occurs firing a
message to the other parts of the brain and the rest of the body. Aromatherapy
works on your body in two distinct ways. One is through smell and olfaction
tranmission to the central nervous system. The other is through massage
where the compounds of the oils breakdown and cross into the bloodstreem.
The end result is a physical, mental, or emotional response brought on by a
particular fragrance.
Think About It...
If you were confined in a room filled with week-old garbage, cigarette butts, and the
strongest perfume from a department store, it is possible that after some exposure
time you may become ill. Possibly developing nausea, a headache, or even
throwing up. All of these physical reactions are in response to the smell. At one
point in our lives we've all been made "sick" by the smell of something. So if the
smell of something bad can cause a reaction like nausea, then the body can also
transmit the smell of something good to bring about a positive physiological effect.
Furthermore, have you ever smell something that triggered a memory? Most people
have. This is a psychological response. The olfactory, the rest of the brain, and the
central nervous system are working off the reaction or signal from the molecules of
"smell" that floated into the nose. So this is aromatherapy, generally speaking,
smell creating a physical and psychological response in you body. It is a
wonderful way to enhance your well-being.
